Estimated Completion: March 2027
The e2i2 Project is currently In Progress. Contractors are actively working on the infrastructure upgrades and the City estimates that the project will be complete by March 2027.
Historically, Chattanooga's wastewater infrastructure has lacked the necessary storage capacity to handle surging volumes during heavy rain events. This deficit frequently resulted in sanitary sewer overflows at various manholes across the city and, until 2023, led to direct discharges into the Tennessee River. To definitively address this challenge, the city is constructing major equalization stations. These vital facilities are designed to create an essential buffer, mitigate the risk of surface overflows, and actively balance the volume of water moving throughout the municipal network. During severe weather, the stations temporarily capture and hold the massive influx of wastewater mixed with unwanted stormwater infiltration, preventing the broader system from becoming overwhelmed. Once peak flows subside and pipeline capacity is restored, the stored water is safely and systematically conveyed to the Moccasin Bend Environmental Campus for comprehensive treatment.
The project encompasses constructing two massive wet weather equalization stations capable of safely storing approximately 40 million gallons of excess wastewater during intense rain events. Backed by a total estimated budget of $153.7 million for both facilities, this initiative is as much an economic driver as it is an environmental safeguard. Beyond protecting local waterways and public health, the project is projected to generate $39 million in direct local investment, creating and supporting crucial jobs throughout the region.
